Asynchronous learning means the learner works alone, at a time they choose — a video assigned as homework, a module in a course site, a lesson watched at 11 p.m. the night before a test. Nobody is available to answer the question they are about to have. LessonSlate is built around that fact rather than despite it.
The question gets asked for you
A recorded lecture is a monologue that assumes you followed it. A LessonSlate lesson is a conversation — and the confused half of that conversation is the learner's stand-in.
Someone raises their hand
The on-screen student hesitates, guesses wrong, and asks the thing you were about to ask. In a live class you would wait for someone brave enough. Alone at midnight there is nobody — so the lesson does it.
The wrong turn is shown, not warned about
Every lesson is built around the mistakes learners actually make on that problem type. Unsupervised study is where those mistakes get practised into habits. Seeing one corrected on screen is the cheapest place to meet it.
The reasoning stays on the board
Every step is drawn and colour-coded — given values blue, unknowns orange, results green. Scrub back and the logic is still legible: with the sound off, on a phone, on a bus.
Nobody has to keep up with anybody
The one thing a live lesson cannot hand a learner is control of the clock. A lecture runs at the speed of the median student in the room. A LessonSlate lesson runs at the speed of the person watching it — pause it, rewind the ten seconds that did not land, watch the same worked example four times before an exam. The teacher on screen never gets impatient and never moves on.
The same problem can also be rendered twice: a slow, gentle walk-through for someone meeting it for the first time, and a brisk recap for someone revising the night before. The reasoning is identical; only the delivery changes. That is differentiated instruction with no teacher in the room to do the differentiating.

A file, not a session
Asynchronous delivery means the lesson has to survive on its own, wherever the learner opens it. A packaged lesson is a self-contained set of files — not something that only works inside our website.

A standard video file. It plays in a course site, on a projector, on a phone, or off a memory stick with no internet at all.
Captions on a real track
A WebVTT subtitle file — the caption format browsers read natively — timed off the same clock the audio is built on, so it cannot drift out of sync.
A scored knowledge check
Multiple-choice questions attached to the lesson, so a learner working alone finds out whether they actually understood it.
An LMS package
A SCORM zip you import into your own learning platform, which then records who completed the module and what they scored.
Where the wrong answers come from
The LessonSlate problem library carries more than 600 hand-written notes recording what learners actually get wrong on each concept — each one a mistake paired with its correction. A question is that pair turned around: the correction becomes the right answer, the mistake becomes the option sitting next to it. No distractor is invented by a model. That is the difference between a question that tests understanding and one that tests reading comprehension.
An honest answer to "did they actually get it?"
The weak point of asynchronous study is that a learner can watch something, feel it made sense, and be wrong about that. A quiz whose wrong options are plausible-sounding filler will not catch it — the right answer ends up being the longest, most careful-sounding one, and learners work that out fast.
Because these options are drawn from real recorded errors, choosing a wrong one tells you something specific: not "they failed", but which misunderstanding they are carrying. That is the feedback a teacher would have given if they had been in the room.
Coverage is uneven and we would rather say so: most problem types carry four or more recorded misconceptions, and some carry only one or two. A lesson built on a thin one returns a shorter check rather than a padded one.
It lands where your learners already are
An LMS — a Learning Management System, the site a school or a company runs its courses through — will not take a plain MP4 and record who passed. It takes a SCORM package: a zip file holding the video, the quiz, and the small piece of code that reports back. Ours has been imported and run in SCORM Cloud, the standard test bed platform vendors check their own products against, reporting a completion and a score with no errors.
Completion and a score
The module reports that the learner finished, and what they scored, so the record lives in your platform instead of in a spreadsheet somebody maintains by hand.
It saves as it goes
Progress is written after every step rather than once at the end. A learner who closes the tab part-way through does not lose the attempt.
It still runs outside an LMS
Open the package on its own and it plays the video and runs the quiz anyway, with reporting switched off — so you can preview a module before importing it, and a learner with no platform account is not locked out.
Tested, not asserted
A LessonSlate module has been imported into SCORM Cloud — the conformance service that LMS vendors themselves test against — and run end to end: it played, it scored, and it reported a completion, with no errors. That is the same package your platform receives. Plenty of low-cost video vendors say "SCORM compatible" without ever having put a package through this.
Accessibility is not an add-on here
A learner working alone has nobody to ask for an accommodation. So captions ship on a real subtitle track rather than burned into the picture; quiz options are proper radio buttons inside a labelled group; and the whole module can be driven from the keyboard with a visible focus outline. These are the things a procurement reviewer checks, and the things low-cost video vendors quietly skip.

What LessonSlate does not do on its own
If you are designing an asynchronous course, these are the gaps you would need to fill some other way. Better you find them here than after you have built around us.
The learner cannot ask
A lesson anticipates the common question; it cannot answer a new one. It replaces the first explanation, not the tutor.
It does not branch
The video is the same for everyone. A wrong quiz answer is not routed to a different explanation — you would assign a different lesson yourself.
No resume bookmark yet
The module reports completion and score, but it does not yet reopen at the minute a learner left off. Short, single-topic lessons keep the cost of that small.
